2024 Local Government Election: Candidate Information Sessions

Information sessions are being held for prospective candidates in the upcoming Singleton local government election to understand the requirements and responsibilities of local Councillors.

There will be two sessions to accommodate everyone who would be interested in attending.

The sessions will be held at Singleton Arts and Cultural Centre on Wednesday 24 July 2024 from 5.30pm to 8pm and Thursday 25 July 2024 from 9am to 11.30am.

The same content will be repeated at each session so prospective candidates will only need to attend one of the sessions. 

The Candidate Information Sessions will be run by a facilitator with extensive experience in local government and include a presentation by a current Councillor who is not standing at the next election.  The session will focus on:  

• The benefits and importance of local government
• A day in the life of a Councillor including challenges of the role and how to meet them
• The importance of speaking out on key issues
• Planning for an election campaign
• Legislative responsibilities and obligations of councillors and what it means to be part of the governing body
• A brief overview of Council’s leadership structure and information about how Councillors can appropriately interact with Council staff
• An introduction to meeting procedures and rules of debate
• Support available including information and networks
