A free outdoor cinema will headline festivities in Townhead Park at Twilight on Saturday 25 January and launch the Australia Day long weekend in Singleton.

There will be something for everyone to enjoy at this free sunset Australia Day Eve community event including live music, free entertainment and activities and food trucks from 6 – 9.30pm.

The fun will continue on Australia Day, Sunday 26 January, with a barbecue breakfast and Citizen of the Year award ceremony at Singleton Civic Centre and free entry into Singleton Gym and Swim.

Mayor of Singleton, Cr Sue Moore said Twilight was the perfect way to celebrate everything that’s great about being Australian and summers in Singleton.

“Twilight symbolises the sun setting on long weeks of school holidays and rising on fresh starts and new opportunities that so many come searching for in Australia,” she said.

“As the sun sets on 25 January, head down to the Townhead Park precinct with your friends and family and enjoy the community spirit, inclusiveness, and a great program of free activities and entertainment including a screening of Happy Feet on the outdoor cinema.

“There’ll also be free snow cones, face painting, a slip and slide so bring your swimmer and a towel, basket weaving, obstacle course and Koorioke. Pack a picnic or choose from the range of food trucks.”

Singleton’s official Australia Day ceremony will kick off at the Civic Centre on 26 January with a traditional barbecue breakfast at 8am, which everyone is welcome to enjoy, ahead of a smoking ceremony at 8.30am by Wonnarua elder and former Citizen of the Year Warren Taggart.

The official ceremony will begin at 9.30am featuring an Address by Australia Day guest Lieutenant Colonel Jarrod Brook, the Commanding Officer School of Infantry, a citizenship ceremony and the announcement of the Singleton Citizen of the Year and Young Achiever of the Year.

“Australia Day is an important event in the calendar where we not only celebrate what makes Singleton the best place to live, work and visit, but to recognise those people who make our community better,” Cr Moore said.

“One of my favourite duties as Mayor is to oversee the citizenship ceremony, so I am very excited to be welcoming 11 new Australian citizens at our official citizenship ceremony.

“From Twilight to our Australia Day ceremony, there’s an opportunity for people of all ages to come together and mark what we all have in common as Australians, and I encourage as many people as possible to be part of it this year.”

For the wider community, enjoy free entry and inflatable water fun at Singleton Gym and Swim from 10am – 12.30pm.

The official Australia Day proceedings will be available to watch on 26 January via livestream on Council’s Facebook page and website: www.singleton.nsw.gov.au/australiaday
