Spring cleaning boosted by bulk waste collection in Singleton
Published on 14 October 2024
Households across Singleton are being encouraged to begin planning their spring clean out ahead of Council’s bulk waste collection service which is locked in from 4 November – 13 December.
The annual collection offers households that receive a domestic waste and recycling service a one-off opportunity to dispose of bulkier waste items free of charge, simply by placing them on the kerbside for collection.
Mary-Anne Crawford, Council’s Acting Director Infrastructure and Planning Services, said in an effort to divert items that can be reused and recycled away from landfill, this year residents were being encouraged to explore all the ways they can get rid of their unwanted items easily and sustainably before putting them on the kerb for collection.
“From our free mattress and tyre drop off days to dropping off household problem waste at the Community Recycling Centre or registering for RecycleSmart where those hard-to-get-rid-of recyclables like soft plastics are collected from your doorstep, there are so many avenues that our residents can take to divert their waste from landfill and help contribute to creating a sustainable Singleton,” she said.
“When you’re doing your spring clean out this year, think about utilising these initiatives or even donating to charity or using sites like Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree, and eBay to sell things like furniture, bikes, kid’s toys, and decor items and reduce your bulk waste pile.
“Council is once again getting behind Garage Sale Trail, which will return on the weekends of 9-10 and 16-17 November. Register to host a garage sale or shop the trail here in Singleton. Not only is it a fantastic way to bag a bargain, it’s also all about extending the life of products and at the same time diverting them away from landfill.
“Best of all, these are all free initiatives that our residents can take advantage of.”

Ms Crawford encouraged residents to make a note of their collection week and to only place their bulky items on the kerb in the week before.
“Our annual bulk waste collection always proves popular with residents, and we expect most eligible households will once again take advantage of this fantastic service, but we need your help to ensure our streets remain safe and clear of clutter during the six-week collection period,” she said.
“Our Rangers will be conducting patrols during and after the collection to check that items left out comply with requirements and are not considered illegal dumping, which may attract a fine, as well as ensure the safety of our community and staff completing the pickup.”
Eligible households can place up to two cubic metres of acceptable domestic waste on the kerb for collection, separated into piles of general waste and scrap metal so that items can be recycled and disposed of sustainably.
The Community Recycle Centre at Singleton Waste Management Facility provides an opportunity for residents to recycle household wastes that are not accepted as part of the bulk waste collection such as electronic waste, batteries, fluorescent globes, paints and oils.
Mattresses are also not accepted as part of the bulk waste collection service, but residents can drop off four for free during the Mattress Muster at the Waste Management Facility from 10am – 2pm on Saturday 23 November.
