The first meeting of the new term of Singleton Council has elected a combination of Cr Sue George and Cr Mel McLachlan to serve in the role of deputy mayor until the next local government election in September 2028.

Cr George was officially appointed for two years until 14 September 2026, when she will hand over the baton to Cr McLachlan for the remaining two years of the Council term.

The resolution came after the Mayor and Councillors took the Oath or Affirmation of Office prior to tonight’s meeting. Singleton Council for the next term is returning Mayor, Cr Sue Moore, Cr Danny Thompson, Cr Scott Yeomans, Cr Godfrey Adamthwaite, Cr Anne McGowan, Cr Patrick Thompson, Cr Peree Watson, Cr Mel McLachlan, Cr Hollee Jenkins and Cr Sue George.

In an address to Councillors, Cr George drew on her experience working in the community, particularly as president of Singleton Neighbourhood Centre, and the importance of developing relationships and working collaboratively with people to lobby for the role.

“I have a deep understanding of the community and the forces impacting on it through my work with the Neighbourhood Centre, and the need to focus on the Advocacy Agenda and what is impacting people particularly as we work towards renewable energy,” she said.

“I’ve got lots of energy, lots of time, and I think I’ve got the skills and the ability to serve the community well.”

Cr McLachlan said she was passionate about contributing to the future of Singleton and the community.

“We are at a pivotal moment, with opportunities for economic growth, sustainable development, and improved community services,” she said.

“I also recognise the importance of sustainability in our planning and development. Protecting our environment and natural resources is not just a responsibility, it is a necessity for future generations.

“I want us to continue to create a council that is accessible and transparent, where residents can share their ideas and concerns.”

Awards of appreciation were also presented to four non-returning councillors from the previous term at the meeting, recognising Tony McNamara, Val Scott, Tony Jarrett and Sarah Johnstone, who between them contributed a total of 55 years of service to the community.
