Creative workshops, games, robotics challenges and an outdoor cinema – there will be no shortage of free activities for young people to enjoy as part of Singleton’s expanded NSW Youth Week celebrations from 9 – 26 April.

Supported by the Department of Communities and Justice and the Department Regional Youth, this year’s program extends beyond Youth Week from 9-17 April to incorporate school holiday activities, culminating in a free screening of heartwarming family adventure film The Wild Robot under the stars at Cook Park on Saturday 26 April.

Youth Week is the largest celebration for young people in Australia, offering youth aged 12 to 25 the opportunity to get together to share ideas, attend events and to celebrate their contributions to their community.

This year’s theme is ‘I am _____ We are the future, and the future is now!’, which celebrates every young person’s unique strengths and recognises their power as our future leaders, influencers and decision makers.

Mayor of Singleton, Cr Sue Moore said with an even greater emphasis on youth and youth activities highlighted in our community’s input to the draft Create Singleton 2035 Community Strategic Plan, it was fantastic to see so many activities available to young people this April.

“Not only does Youth Week directly represent our local young people and their interests, but it also provides them with opportunities to learn for free, access social events to meet and connect with others, and experience fun in their own way,” she said.

“During Youth Week, our young people can try their hand at henna tattoos, explore the world of crystals and play laser tag at Singleton Youth Venue, hear from award-winning author Felicity Castagna and join her for a creative writing class at Singleton Public Library and delve into virtual reality at Singleton Arts + Cultural Centre.

“There’s also a huge range of workshops our young people can try for free, ranging from art to hula hooping, music and dance to car maintenance, plus activities like a silent disco, trivia and Giant Monopoly.

“I encourage everyone to pack a chair or picnic rug and sprawl out on the grass to watch The Wild Robot at Cook Park Number Five, near the netball courts, on 26 April from 6.30-9.30pm.”

Bring your own movie snacks or visit Singleton Netball Association’s canteen on the night.
