Singleton Speaker Series

History, mystery and tales of old will be brought to life by an impressive line-up of top authors at Singleton Public Library this winter.

Wonnarua elder and Singleton’s 2022 Citizen of the Year Uncle Warren Taggart, acclaimed historical novelist Lauren Chater and award-winning local author Paula Beavan are next up in the Singleton Speaker Series, the year-long celebration marking the 20th anniversary of the Library’s home in Queen Street.

Vicki Brereton, Council’s Director Organisation and Community Capacity said the community’s response to the Library’s anniversary celebrations had been fantastic so far and she was looking forward to seeing even more high calibre authors come to Singleton.

“Our Library team has already hosted an impressive list of speakers since launching the series in April including Candice Fox, Peter FitzSimons and Scott Bevan, but there is still so many more to come and the line-up for the cooler months is certainly going to keep our readers fired up,” she said.

“In addition to talks by some our own homegrown talent in Uncle Warren and Paula Beavan, this winter we’ll also be offering two free Wellness Workshops with Kristy Woods as part of the speaker series.

“I encourage everyone in our community to take up free tickets to all of our Singleton Speaker Series events in June and July and help us continue the celebration of our wonderful Library.”

Kicking off the winter speaker series program on Friday 7 June will be Lauren Chater who will talk about her newest historical novel The Beauties, a seductive story of rivalry, artistic passion and a woman bold enough to wield her beauty as a weapon.

Hunter Valley author Paula Beavan will join booklovers at the Library on Thursday 27 June to discuss her latest historical mystery.

Set in the Hunter Valley in 1842, Among the Grey Gums is an adventure filled with bushrangers, corruption, cover-ups, and a perilous journey to the truth.

In a special NAIDOC Week author talk, Uncle Warren will be taking readers beyond the pages of his book Spirit of Place: Aboriginal Site of the Hunter Region on Friday 12 July.

Published with local photographers Carol Carter and Allan Chawner in 2021, the book features photographs and stories of cave shelters, rock engraving and landmarks of significant cultural importance and was featured as a highly successful exhibition at Singleton Arts and Cultural Centre last year.
