The 70th anniversary of one of the region’s worst floods on record will flow into the Singleton Emergency Services Expo which is set to return bigger and better than ever on Saturday 8 March.

Reflections from the 1955 flood, which devastated townships across the Hunter Valley including Singleton, and the evolution of emergency services over the past seven decades will be marked at the Expo that will be held in the new location of Civic Park from 9am – 12pm.

Aaron Malloy, Council’s Acting Director Infrastructure and Planning Services, said how to prepare for an emergency and agencies that can assist in the recovery of one will be in the spotlight this year.

“While flashing lights and sirens often steal the show, emergencies are a two-sided story,” he said.

“The response phase to an emergency focuses on immediate action, but the recovery phase is just as critical in helping communities rebuild and return to normal.

“This year, our recovery partners including the Disaster Recovery Chaplaincy Network and Samaritans will also take the spotlight, showcasing the vital services they offer and how they support communities after disasters.

“We will also be showcasing the role Council plays in responding to an emergency and in the recovery.”

A broad range of agencies have partnered with Singleton Council to deliver this free family-friendly event including NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire + Rescue NSW, NSW Police, NSW State Emergency Service, NSW Ambulance and Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

Mr Malloy said families didn’t want to miss this unique opportunity to see local emergency services in action, experience live simulations and demonstrations, and learn how to prepare for an emergency event.

“You can expect all the crowd favourites including a helicopter landing, this year by PolAir, interactive displays, emergency vehicle tours and hands-on activities for the kids,” he said.

“As well as bringing its mounted unit this year, NSW Police will join Fire + Rescue NSW, Ambulance, SES and Ausgrid in a multi-agency emergency demonstration.

““Residents can watch our Rural Fire Service Juniors demonstrate their firefighting skills, speak to the services about emergency preparedness and learn how to get involved in their local Get Ready Team.

“All the mascots are in training now for an even more thrilling annual race, which is always a big hit.

“There’s something for everyone to enjoy at the Expo and it’s also the perfect opportunity to show your appreciation for the people who work tirelessly to keep our community safe.”
