Scores on Doors

Scores on Doors is the NSW food hygiene scoring program that reassures customers about hygiene and food safety standards.

Scores rate a food business’s compliance with hygiene and food safety requirements based on the existing, mandatory inspections by Council. Scores are assessed on a standardised checklist – Food Premises Assessment Report (FPAR).

Participation in the program is not legislated, it is voluntary.

Scores on Doors is good for business because:

  • It provides a marketing advantage for businesses that comply with food safety legislation.
  • Displaying a Scores on Doors certificate or sticker can provide a point of difference from competitors. It can see more customers walk through the door.
  • Customers can easily see the business has qualified for a score when they visit. A business with any level of certificate or sticker was free from critical hygiene and food safety issues at the time of the inspection.
  • You can also promote your score on your website and in your marketing.

The Scores on Doors assessment occurs during your normal routine food safety inspections. It just makes the current process more transparent, therefore it does not involve any additional inspections or costs to your business.

Consumer Guide

Scores on Doors is a hygiene and food safety rating program that allows you to make informed choices about where to eat or shop for food.

You become aware of how well local restaurants, cafes, bakeries, bistros and takeaway shops are complying with the NSW hygiene and food safety requirements by showing the result of their last food safety and hygiene inspection.

During routine inspections, businesses are assessed against a food safety checklist and assigned a star rating reflecting their performance.

Businesses display the certificate and sticker, showing the score they are awarded.

Certificates and stickers should be displayed in a prominent position, usually the front window or door or inside.

Council also publishes a list of participating 5 star premises in the Singleton LGA.

The program promotes competition and encourages businesses to strive for the highest hygiene score through good hygiene and food safety practices.

That helps reduce food safety risks and illness from food, so you can enjoy your meal with greater confidence.

If a business is not participating in the program, ask them why and suggest they do!

How to get the best rating

Every business wants to get a top score and is capable of achieving it.  To get the best possible rating, you should:

  • Make sure your premises has a current designated Food Safety Supervisor and that a copy of their certificate can be viewed at inspection.
  • Look at your last inspection report to check that you’ve taken care of all the actions needed to meet legal requirements. If you can’t find your last report, contact Council to obtain a copy.
  • Continue to make regular checks to ensure hygiene standards are being maintained and staff are following rules. You could also download a copy of the inspection report and undertake a self check.
  • Promptly arrange for any repairs and conduct regular maintenance of the premises and equipment.
  • Download and read the fact sheet to ensure that you have addressed the 5 most common issues found by council officers.
