Exempt development
Exempt development is a category of development which meets pre-determined design standards and is exempt from the assessment and approval requirements of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979. The standards or rules that a development must comply with to be “exempt development” are numerical, meaning that the design needs to exactly meet the numbers in the rules.

The Rules for a property and development enquiry tool can be used to identify whether your development proposal may be considered as exempt development and what rules apply.

The predetermined standards for exempt development can be found in:

Examples of the types of development that might be considered under the exempt development process include small access ramps and air conditioning units.
