Singleton Council is inviting everyone get involved in the Singleton Seniors Festival, with a jam-packed program of festivities to kick off next Monday, 18 February.
The week- long festival includes a U3A (University of the Third Age) Taster Day, YMCA Prime Play for over 55s, Singleton Neighbourhood Centre open day for all things financial and legal, golf lessons, the Try-it expo with 35 clubs and service groups, and a Rock and Roll Dance at the Singleton Golf Club.
Council’s Senior Community Planner, David Baker said with the theme “love your life”, this year’s festival was a great opportunity for seniors and not-so-seniors to connect, share, celebrate and be inspired to try new things, together.
“We have a fantastic program of events and something for everyone — from information sessions and workshops offering expert advice and skill development, through to a range of fun social events,” he said.
Central to the festival will be the Try-it in Singleton Expo on Wednesday 20 February, where community organisations and groups will showcase their activities to active seniors including healthy lifestyle activities, community services and social opportunities, with sites ranging from hand care to home security.
“The Try- it in Singleton expo aims to engage with people regardless of age,” Mr Baker said.
“Many people in the community are approaching the senior’s age group, but do not consider themselves seniors; they rather think of themselves as un-young, vibrant or an elder of the community.
“Festival – goers will find opportunities for engaging in sporting, cultural, craft, educational, service and well-being activities which promote social participation and active and healthy lifestyles, whilst establishing connections fundamental to a person’s sense of self and belonging.
“There’s lots to love about life at any age, and there’s lots to love about this year’s festival.”
Vulnerable seniors will have an opportunity to enjoy the events of the week, with transport options available and passive participation encouraged.
The NSW Seniors Festival is an annual event held across the state, and encourages local seniors to enjoy new experiences, continue learning, impart their skills and have fun. It is the largest festival for people over 60 in the Southern Hemisphere, attracting up to 500,000 seniors across New South Wales.
